mplayer2 as an alternative to Windows Media Player
Did you know that XP ships with Windows Media Player 6 (the "classic," no-frills version)? To access it, go to Start -> Run -> "mplayer2." It is a bare-bones version of Windows Media Player that won't hog too much memory.
